BIOGRAPHY

Praised for her pliant mezzo (South Florida Classical Review), pleasant tone (Dallas Morning News), and resonant, round sound (Miami Arts Review), Charlotte Stewart is a versatile performer whose scope extends from the medieval to the contemporary. Charlotte grew up singing as a chorister at Washington National Cathedral, where she had the privilege of singing many events of national importance for state and foreign dignitaries including sitting and former presidents, members of the Senate and the House, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and the Dalai Lama. Charlotte has also had the honor of singing for the funerals of Ronald Reagan, Bob Dole, Ash Carter, and Madeleine Albright, as well as for the memorial services for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, for Matthew Shepard, and for the World Central Kitchen Humanitarians.

Charlotte has performed with many of the DC areas top ensembles, including the Wolf Trap Opera, Washington Concert Opera, Opera Lafayette, Washington Bach Consort, the National Symphony Orchestra, The Thirteen, the 21st Century Consort, Folger Consort, Chantry, the choirs of The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, and others, and has recorded twelve albums with various ensembles, the most recent of which with renowned Welsh composer, Paul Mealor. 

 

Operatic credits include Verdi'La Traviata with Wolf Trap Opera and the National Symphony Orchestra, Delibes' Lakmé, Verdi'Nabucco, and Puccini's La Rondine with Washington Concert Opera, Strauss' Der Rosenkavalier at the Kennedy Center with the National Symphony Orchestra under Christoph Eschenbach, David's Lalla Roukh at Lincoln Center with Opera Lafayette, and Augusta in Moore'The Ballad of Baby Doe in the Washington National Opera Institute. Other operatic roles include Nerone in Monteverdis Lincoronazione di Poppea, Florence Pike in Brittens Albert Herring, Third Lady in Mozarts The Magic Flute, Hänsel in Humperdincks Hänsel und Gretel, Le Prince Charmant in Massenet's Cendrillon, Tisbe in La Cenerentola, the Sorceress in Purcell'Dido and Aeneas, and various roles in L'Enfant et les Sortileges and in Suor Angelica.

Past oratorio and concert engagements as a soloist have included Bachs St. John Passion, Bach's St. Matthew Passion, Duruflés Requiem, Faurés Requiem, Mozarts Requiem, Vivaldi's Stabat Mater, Mendelssohns Elijah, Bachs Christmas Oratorio, Handel's Messiah, Brittens Rejoice in the Lamb, DAstorgas Stabat Mater, Mozart’s Vesperae Solennes, Brahms' Liebeslieder Waltzes, numerous Bach cantatas, and others.

Charlotte earned her Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance degree from Southern Methodist University, her Master of Music in Vocal Performance degree from the University of Miami in Florida, and most recently, her Master of Science in Educational Psychology from the University of Maine. Charlotte also maintains an active teaching studio and will be embarking on her thirteenth year on the voice faculty at the National Cathedral and St. Albans Schools in Washington, DC. She also serves as the director of the St. Cecilia children's choir at St. John's Church, Lafayette Square in Washington, DC.
